Jockey Club Innovation Building, Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Architect: Christian de Bauzambach (Pritzker Prize-winning)The innovative building’s unique shape is a big challenge. It occupies a small area and has an irregular shape. Therefore, the building is designed in the shape of a "ship" in order to increase the usable space of the Innovation Building in Hong Kong, where every inch of land is valuable, and to give full play to its greater functions. "The interior is full of flowing curves, which makes the whole space full of technology. GRG is widely used in the ceiling, stairs and side railings of the river. Through creative designs such as color, texture and mechanism, the white curves are perfectly integrated with the sense of space.
Unlike the square box of modernism, the architect designed a long "streamer" shaped like a "ꝏ", which wraps around from one wing of the top of the building to the other side, then passes through the facade to reach the height above the ground. It is 40 meters away from the crosswalk, forming a visual opening area leading to the lake. The two high and low steel structure ribbons are intertwined to form a very iconic architectural feature, which is both the roof of the Grand Theater and the side wall of the Expo Center.
The innovative structure and curtain wall integrated design won two championships in China: the maximum span of the high-level "streamer" is 100 meters, and the length of the low-level "streamer" is 370 meters
